Print full NumPy array without truncation in Python

In this article, we will learn how to print the full NumPy array without truncation in Python.

Table Of Contents

What is a truncation of a Numpy array?

Usually when we print an array, it will display the entire array if the length of array is less than or equal to 1000. But, if the size of array is greater than 1000, then instead of displaying the entire array, python will just display starting three elements and ending three elements of array.

For example, if an array contains first 2000 natural numbers and when we print that array in python, The output will be as following.

[   1    2    3 ... 1998 1999 2000]

Given a NumPy array we need to print the entire NumPy, regardless of length of the array.

There are multiple ways to print the full NumPy array without truncation. Lets discuss all the methods one by one with proper approach and a working code example

The numpy module have set_printoptions() function, and it is used to set how the arrays, floating-point numbers, NumPy objects are to be displayed. By default the maximum array elements displayed without truncation is 1000. Now by using passing the threshold as infinity, we can print the entire array without truncation.

Syntax of set_printoptions() function

numpy.set_printoptions(threshold = None)
  • Parameters:
    • threshold = The threshold represents the maximum number of array elements that can be displayed without truncation.
  • Returns:
    • None.

Approach:

  1. Import numpy library and create numpy array of length greater than 1000, using zeros() method.
  2. Pass the threshold value as infinity to the set_printoptions() method.
  3. Print the Array, The entire array will be displayed without truncation.

Source Code

import numpy as np

# creating a numpy array of length 1111
# and filled with all zeros
arr = np.zeros(1111)

# Removing the truncation
np.set_printoptions(threshold=np.inf)

print(arr)

Output:

The numpy module has a set_printoptions() function, and it is used to set how the arrays, floating-point numbers, NumPy objects are to be displayed. By default if the size of array is greater than 1000, then python will just display starting 3 elements and ending 3 elements of array. So these starting and ending 3 elements are called edgeitems, we will set the edgeitem limit as infinity.

Syntax of set_printoptions() function

numpy.set_printoptions(edgeitems = None)
  • Parameters:
    • edgeitems = Number of array items in summary at beginning and end of each dimension, By default 3
  • Returns:
    • None.

Approach:

  1. Import numpy library and create numpy array of length greater than 1000, using zeros() method.
  2. Pass the edgeitems value as infinity to the set_printoptions() method.
  3. Print the Array, The entire array will be displayed without truncation.

# Removing the truncation

Pring NumPy Array without truncation using printoptions(), Context manager and threshold

The numpy module has a printoptions() function and it acts as a Context manager for setting print options. the printoptions() function is used to set how the arrays, floating-point numbers, NumPy objects are to be displayed. By default the maximum array elements displayed without truncation is 1000. Now by using passing the threshold as infinity, we will print the entire array without truncation.

Syntax of printoptions() function

numpy.printoptions(threshold = None)
  • Parameters:
    • threshold = The threshold represents the maximum number of array elements that can be displayed without truncation.
  • Returns:
    • None.

Approach:

  1. Import numpy library and create numpy array of length greater than 1000, using zeros() method.
  2. Pass the threshold value as infinity to the printoptions() method.
  3. Print the Array. The entire array will be displayed without truncation.

Source Code

import numpy as np

# Creating a numpy array of length 1111
# and filled with all zeros
arr = np.zeros(1111)

# Remove the truncation and print full NumPy Array
with np.printoptions(threshold=np.inf):
    print(arr)

The numpy module have printoptions() function, and it is a Context manager for setting print options. the printoptions() function is used to set how the arrays, floating-point numbers, NumPy objects are to be displayed. If the size of array is greater than 1000, then by default Python will just display first and last 3 elements of array. These starting and ending 3 elements are called edgeitems. We will set the edgeitem limit as infinity.

Syntax of printoptions() function

numpy.printoptions(edgeitems = None)
  • Parameters:
    • edgeitems = Number of array items in summary at beginning and end of each dimension, By default 3
  • Returns:
    • None.

Approach:

  1. Import numpy library and create numpy array of length greater than 1000, using zeros() method.
  2. Pass the edgeitems value as infinity to the printoptions() method.
  3. Print the Array, The entire array will be displayed without truncation.

Source Code

import numpy as np

# Creating a numpy array of 1111 elements
# and all filled with zeros
arr = np.zeros(1111)

# Remove truncation and print Full NumPy Array
with np.printoptions(edgeitems=np.inf):
    print(arr)

Output:

The numpy module has array2string() function, and it returns a string representation of an array.

Syntax of array2string() function

numpy.array2string(arr, threshold = None)
  • Parameters:
    • arr = The input array
    • threshold = The threshold represents the maximum number of array elements that can be displayed without truncation.

Approach:

  1. Import numpy library and create numpy array of length greater than 1000, using zeros() method.
  2. Pass the threshold value as infinity to the array2string() method.
  3. Print the Array, The entire array will be displayed without truncation.

Source Code

import numpy as np

# Creating a numpy array
# of 1111 zero numbers
arr = np.zeros(1111)

# Print full NumPy Array without truncation
print(np.array2string(arr, threshold=np.inf))
